As Waiheke Island’s largest beach, Onetangi offers stunning views over Great Barrier and Little Barrier Islands in the distance. The pristine golden sands and some of the clearest waters in the Auckland region make it an idyllic spot.
Running parallel to the beach, you’ll find a selection of cafes and restaurants, providing a perfect spot to enjoy a meal while soaking in the beach’s stunning scenery. There’s also a picnic area with BBQ facilities along the shore.
Onetangi Beach is famous for hosting the historic Onetangi Beach Races, an iconic event that’s been drawing locals and visitors for over a hundred years. Typically held in March, it’s one of the island’s most celebrated events.
The beach is part of the Waiheke Island walkways, with trails criss-crossing the area and offering impressive cliffside views. The walk takes around an hour and features mature native bush, including a nikau grove and a kauri tree in Victoria Reserve. The trail begins at the intersection of The Strand and Fourth Avenue.
