Hidden beneath the rolling hills of Waiheke Island lies one of New Zealand’s most fascinating historic sites – the Fort Stony Batter Tunnels, a HERITAGE 1 LISTED WWII Coastal Defence Fortress. Built during World War II as part of Auckland’s coastal defence network, this labyrinth of underground passages, chambers, and gun emplacements offers a rare glimpse into the island’s wartime past. Today, visitors can explore the preserved tunnels while enjoying sweeping views over the Hauraki Gulf.

The fortress was designed to take direct enemy bombardment and is in a very high state of preservation.

The complex comprises 1.2km’s of subterranean passages, chambers and stairwells all tunnelled by hand. This is an Architectural, Engineering and Construction marvel.
