The instantly recognisable golden sand beaches with their overhanging, often unruly, Pohutakawa are a sure sign you’re in the Hauraki Gulf. Onetangi is no exception, but it is exceptional. The 2 km stretch of sand has many endearing and inviting moods. In just one stay, you might be fortunate enough to witness several.

Onetangi means weeping sands, and whilst this refers to a battle fought many years ago, when the tide goes out the sand does appear to be weeping water toward the ocean. Due to this gradual slope, the tide retreats considerably, and the vast expanse of firm sand is a pleasure to walk, run or jog along.

One day, the ocean might be lapping gently at your toes, inviting you for a calm swim. The next, the wind in the outer Hauraki may have whipped up small gentle waves, compelling you to body surf like a kid. Leaving you feeling refreshed and invigorated. Very occasionally, a proper swell comes from the north, and you can see surfers the length of the beach, but the real pros are at the eastern end.

You can wile away the hours watching the ebb and flow of the tide and the neverending boat activities at the eastern end. You could even be fortunate enough to witness an exciting vehicle rescue. The western end has long been the designated beach for minimal attire, so don’t be surprised if you witness some birthday suit sunbathing, out of vogue now but occasionally frequented by a few old-school brave locals and an ode to the past.

Onetangi Beach faces the outer Hauraki islands. From left to right, you can see Hauturu (Little Barrier), Aotea (Great Barrier), and the Coromandel, which is at the tip of Aotearoa’s North Eastern mainland. These islands may be visible or hidden depending on conditions. Those in the know can even predict tomorrow’s weather.

Whether you are an early bird or a night owl, the glorious sunsets, special sunrises, and bright stars are sure to impress on any day of the week. The ever changing combination of sun, sea and sand a true delight. We look forward to you joining us in this little slice of paradise!
