Jurassic Ridge

Jurassic Ridge Vineyard is the creation of Lance Blumhardt, who serves as its founder, owner, viticulturist, and winemaker. With a background in science, geology, and medicine, Lance brings a multifaceted expertise to his winemaking endeavours. His scientific knowledge has been instrumental in understanding the vineyard’s unique terroir and applying sustainable viticultural practices.
The name “Jurassic Ridge” reflects the vineyard’s distinctive geological foundation. The vines are planted over the exposed core of an ancient mountain ridge composed of 155-million-year-old rock formations from the Late Jurassic period. This sedimentary rock strata includes greywacke sandstones, mudstones, argillites, and cherts, interspersed with submarine basaltic pillow lavas. These ancient formations weather into low-fertility, stony, clay soils rich in iron oxides, manganese, and magnesium, contributing to the unique characteristics of the wines produced.
Lance is committed to sustainability. Jurassic Ridge meets all its electricity needs through solar energy, powering the winery’s presses, pumps, refrigeration, and cellar door facilities. This initiative underscores Lance’s dedication to environmentally responsible winemaking.
Visitors to Jurassic Ridge often have the opportunity to engage directly with Lance during tastings, gaining insights into his winemaking philosophy and the vineyard’s history. This personal interaction enhances the overall experience, allowing guests to appreciate the passion and expertise that shape each bottle of wine.
