Jasper Ridge Estate

Jasper Ridge Estate

Jasper Ridge Vineyard is a family-owned estate focused on producing premium red wines. Known for its commitment to traditional winemaking methods, the vineyard offers a relaxed atmosphere for wine enthusiasts. Jasper Ridge Estate, located on Waiheke Island’s eastern end, is owned and managed by David Bishop and Derek Ireland. They are actively involved in the vineyard’s daily operations, often enlisting the help of friends and family during peak periods to ensure meticulous care of the vines and production processes.

David Bishop deepened his expertise in viticulture and oenology by earning a Master of Science in Wine Science from the University of Auckland. He also contributes to the academic community as a guest lecturer at the university’s Goldie Estate on Waiheke Island.

The ethos of Jasper Ridge Estate is firmly rooted in the Māori principle of Kaitiakitanga, emphasizing guardianship and sustainable management of the land. The estate operates sustainably, utilizing rain-harvested water, on-site waste management, and solar power. Of the seven-hectare property, only one hectare is under vine, with the remainder dedicated to native bush and diverse flora and fauna, reflecting their commitment to environmental stewardship.

David and Derek collaborate with viticulturists, winemakers, and industry professionals both on Waiheke Island and beyond, ensuring that each vintage reflects their dedication to quality and sustainability.

This philosophy has garnered recognition, with their 2010 Syrah Reserve receiving Gold and Best in Class Awards from the London International Wine and Spirits Competition
